Most Memorable Day(s)

Day 20 ~ March SOLSC

This piece is inspired by Linda Rief’s quickwrites from The Quickwrite Handbook, 100 Mentor Texts to Jumpstart Your Students’ Thinking and Writing.  It’s in draft form, a true quickwrite.  After writing this, I feel like it can be used as a springboard from many other pieces or can stand on its own.

The Most Memorable Day…

How many days do I have to choose from? Fourteen thousand, three hundred, ninety-two.  Can I really pick out my most memorable day from all of those days?    What would make it memorable?

Was it the day I got married?  The hot, humid, day in July 13 years ago when I married my best friend.  A day that was filled with love and happiness.

Was it when my daughter was born?  The waiting and waiting and finally hearing my doctor say “Mommy, you were right…it’s a girl.”

Was it the day I graduated high school or college?  I worked super hard to accomplish both of those goals – very proud of myself.

Was it the day I got my license?  I can remember being so nervous to learn how to drive and take that test.  And, I waited until I was 19.

Was it the first day in my own classroom?  I remember moments and pieces of that day.  I remember my first bunch of kiddos.  They were a memorable bunch.

Was it the day my dad unexpectedly passed away?  I don’t want this to be memorable, but I can vividly remember that night.  I don’t remember much from the hours before that dreadful call, but from that point on, it’s like it happened yesterday.

Was it the day my husband found his biological father and our lives changed forever (for the good)?  I can still remember the moment he received a message back from his dad.

Was it the day when my husband and his father reunited in person?  The drive to his house felt like it had taken forever.

I’m not sure I can pinpoint the most memorable day of my life.  Some of these moments fill me with joy, and at least one breaks my heart.  As for a whole day – I remember parts – tiny moments.  Some are more clear in my mind then others.  I wonder what makes certain moments stick more then others.  Or why do I hold on to certain moments and not others?  All these wonderings sound like the beginning of another piece.
