It would’ve been their 40th Anniversary

Day 18 ~ March SOLSC

Today would’ve been my parents’ 40th wedding anniversary.

It would’ve been a day where my dad would’ve gotten my mom a cheesy card that would’ve made him giggle and say to us “watch this” as he gave it to her.  It would’ve made her roll her eyes and shake her head.  (We know she loved these kinds of cards though).  Knowing my dad, he probably would’ve also bought a sappy card and would’ve signed it either with “All my love” or “Love always.”  There would be no flowers because my mom hated when he brought flowers home.  (Sometimes he would do it just to bust her chops – ha!)

Maybe this would’ve happened, but instead…

My mom is “celebrating” by herself.  Maybe she’s reminiscing about their life together.  Maybe she’s remembering the day they said their “I do’s” in my grandparent’s “piano” room overlooking the river.  (It’s called the piano room because it literally has a piano in it).  Maybe she’s picturing the fire truck coming down the street with tissue paper wedding bells on it.  My dad was a firefighter and fire chief so the truck had to come to his wedding.  (It came to mine too since my hubby is also a firefighter).  Maybe she’s remembering all the years of goofy cards that made her smile and roll her eyes.  I’m sure she has many of them still.  Or maybe she’s looking at pictures of the two of them together.  Whatever she’s doing, I hope she’s remembering the happiness they shared and letting a smile come across her face.

Of all the things she may (or may not) be doing today on their anniversary, one thing is for sure – my mom is missing my dad just like she does every single other day.

Happy Anniversary Mom – wish Dad was here to give you a cheesy card and to celebrate.  But it’s Monday, which is fire house night, so he probably would’ve been there at his meeting!

  1. Jen,
I was tearing up as I read this post. Beautiful words and tribute about your mom and dad and the relationship they shared. As a widow I know this all first hand, and applaud you for still recognizing this very special day for your mom!
