Day 21 – March SOLSC
This post is inspired by Lynne Dorfman’s post Things to do if you are a Daffodil. When she was mentioning the mentor text she used, she also noted a mentor text I use with my first graders – How to Be by Lisa Brown. We’ve only used the book as a mentor for our “how to” unit of study. So, today I’m using Lisa Brown’s How to Be as a mentor for my poem “How to be a Snowflake.” (Currently the 4th Nor’easter of the month is dropping snow as I write)
How to be a Snowflake
Dance and twirl down from the heavy clouds above
Land gracefully upon the surfaces below
Kiss and tickle the noses of everyone you meet
Be luminous
Be beautiful
Be unique.
I’m excited to incorporate this mentor text and the one from Lynne’s blog into my First Grade Poetry unit!
I’m participating in the March Slice of Life Story Challenge! Thank you to the team of writers at Two Writing Teachers for this wonderful writing community. A place for us to grow together as writers.
We left NYC just as the snow was beginning. We Texans were sad to miss its beauty.

I wrote this trying to remember the beauty the snow has. It’s been a rough month of these snow storms. Hoping the snow isn’t too heavy and the trees stay standing tall!

Love your poem! Ready for the snow to go, though! I use How To Be with my K writers and they always love writing How To Be poems!

I’m ready for it to go too! I don’t know why I never thought to use this text with poetry. My 1st graders loved making how to be books and I’m sure they will love poems.

Gkad to see you and Shelly have become acquainted. I have spent lots of time in Shelly’s kindergarten classes. Shelly’s kids are writers!
Loved the snowflake poem, Jen. Love the great word choice and perfect verbs for this delicate piece. Reminds me how beautiful snowfall is. Guess I can put up with it and even appreciate it for a few more days! Thanks, Jen.

I’m glad to be acquainted with both of you. Primary writers amaze me every single day. When I taught K, I was always amazed. And then making the move to first and seeing the writing continue to develop. Their little voices coming out in their writing. Puts a smile on my face!
I tried to capture the beauty of the snow to try and not be bothered by yet more snow!

Love this! This makes me want to write something satirical, like “How to be a meteorologist” or “How to be the 4th Nor’Easter in one season”! I’m currently watching snowflakes dance and twirl outside my window!

Oh this just gave me a great idea for my poetry unit that my class will be doing next month! As I read this all I could hear was Debussy’s piece The Snow is Dancing. It’s your words in musical form.

Wow! I developed a love of poetry when I taught Kindergarten and it continues with my 1st graders and now I’m even trying out poetry myself.
