I’m a complete newbie to the Slice of Life community. I’ve never actually written a slice and posted it. Instead of starting out small with the Tuesday Slice of Life stories, I have decided to dive right in with the Slice of Life Story Challenge 2017! I’m nervous, excited, and a little bit shocked.
Of course, I’m left with some lingering questions….
How in the world am I going to be able to do this every day? March is a crazy month. Report cards are due, after school meetings and parent teacher conferences scheduled, taking my daughter to karate class, making dinner, laundry, and the list just keeps going and going. How am I ever going to find things to write about for an entire month? Why didn’t I start small and give the Tuesday Slice a try? That probably would’ve been much easier and less stressful.
With all of these questions and doubts running through my mind, I can’t help but reflecting and thinking about why I chose to do this. I never liked writing as a kid. I never thought I was good at it, my papers would be returned with red marks all over them, and I ended up dreading any kind of writing assignment. Ironically, it’s my most favorite subject to teach my first graders. I know that in order to become a better teacher of writing for my kiddos, I need to be a writer myself. So, here I am, diving into this challenge, and beginning to live a writerly life.
Woohoo!!! Good for you for diving in. You won’t be sorry. You are absolutely right — being a writer yourself WILL make you a better teacher of writing. We couldn’t teach reading well if we didn’t read, right? As for daily inspiration, you will be amazed how the ideas will come once you start looking for them. There are also many resources and ideas out there if you need help. Again, welcome to the SOL community! We are glad you are here!!

Welcome to the SOLC! I remember feeling the same way when I started….actually, I still feel the same on March 1st, and this is my fifth year to participate! If you’re lucky, it just becomes part of your routine, which is really frustrating when you hit a wall and don’t know what to write, because then you don’t want to upset the routine! Looking forward to your musings this month.

This is my second year slicing, and I feel that same sense of trepidation and have all those same questions. Last night before bed, I lay there thinking, I’m really in, I’m definitely doing this. And then nope, I can’t possibly do this, too much going on in March, haven’t been writing, can’t do it. Back and forth. I still haven’t written today–but I am here commenting, so that’s a first step, right? It’s a wonderful community and it’s surprising what we discover about ourselves and our writing when we commit to publishing every day for 31 days. I find a lot of inspiration in other slices: I’ve already bookmarked several this morning as possible mentor texts for later pieces.

Congratulations on your first SOL Challenge! I dove in last year and it was tough, but I finished with a post every day. It was definitely a great learning experience. I recommend keeping a small notebook where you can write ideas to pull from. That will help with the writer’s block! Best of luck to you on your journey!

Welcome! Last year was my first year and I dove in as you did – a complete novice. I know you will learn so much about being a writer by participating. Hold on to your hat. The learning curve is high and it is ALL good!
